For twenty-five years, “getting found online” meant one thing: ranking on Google. That’s changing. More and more people now ask a question of ChatGPT, or read Google’s AI-generated answer, and never click a blue link at all. If your business is invisible to those systems, you’re invisible to a growing slice of your market — and most businesses don’t yet know whether they are.

Search is becoming an answer, not a list

The old model handed you ten results and let you choose. The new model reads the web and hands back a single, synthesised answer — often citing a handful of sources. The question for any business is no longer only “do we rank?” but “when an AI explains our industry, are we one of the sources it draws on, and does it describe us correctly?”

How AI systems decide who to trust

Nobody gets the full recipe, but the ingredients are clear enough. These systems favour content that is clearly written, factually consistent about who you are, and structured so a machine can extract it. That means a few things in practice:

  • Consistent facts about your business everywhere it appears — same name, same services, same locations. Contradictions make you a weaker source.
  • Structured data (schema markup) that tells a machine plainly what your pages are about.
  • Content that answers real questions directly, in plain language, rather than marketing fluff.
  • Third-party mentions — directories, press, sector bodies — that corroborate what your own site claims.

None of this is a gimmick. It’s mostly the same discipline that made a site genuinely good in the first place — clarity, accuracy, structure — applied with machines as a second audience.

What we’re doing about it

We’ve built AI-search thinking into how we structure and write sites, and we can monitor how your business is being represented across the systems that matter — Google’s AI answers, ChatGPT and others — then work to improve it. It’s an emerging field, and being early is an advantage: the businesses that get their house in order now are the ones these systems will learn to cite.

If a customer asks an AI about your industry and your name never comes up, that’s not a small gap. That’s the new front page.
